These once-wimpy piano-pop Brits muscled up on 2008's Perfect Symmetry, with producers Jon Brion and Stuart Price tricking out Keane's post-Coldplay musings with fuzzy guitars and booming hip-hop beats. That toughening process continues on this intrepid eight-song mini-album: The dark Depeche Mode synths of "Back in Time" grind against Tom Chaplin's schoolboy vocals, while Somali-Canadian MC K'naan contributes lively guest verses to "Stop for a Minute" and "Looking Back." | On 2008's Perfect Symmetry, Keane, the U.K. piano tinklers, steered further into the rock-bombast fast lane. Now they've veered onto a whole new highway — somewhere between OneRepublic Road and Pet Shop Boys Boulevard. On Night Train their knack for earworm melodies is hard to fault, but between rap breakdowns from K'Naan and the odd techno noodlings, it can be tough to tell who's at the wheel. B-...full text |

| Keane collaborating with rappers? On their fourth album, the erstwhile Brit-pop whimperers join forces with K'Naan on "Stop for a Minute," where the Canadian MC rhymes while Tom Chaplin belts out one of the band's patented big, cresting choruses. Even better — and weirder — is "Ishin Denshin," a sprightly synth-propelled ditty with vocal help from Japanese baile-funk singer Tigarah. Elsewhere, there is brass-bolstered soul, electro-flavored dance pop and other un-Keane-like songs. The band can still deliver the angsty goods (check out the gusty "My Shadow"), but Keane have proved themselves masters of — gasp! — pop perkiness....full text |
